2021年7月1日(木) – 7月11日(日)の期間、コンテンポラリー・ミクストメディア・アーティストOnree Roque（オンレ・ロク）と陶芸家Hans Chew（ハンス・チュウ）による2人展 「Appetite For Failure」を開催いたします。

 

Onree Roqueはニューヨーク出身の陶芸を中心に活動を行っているコンテンポラリー・ミクストメディア・アーティストです。Hans Chewはシンガポール出身で、現在は陶芸家として活動しながら多摩美術大学 工芸学科で陶芸を学んでいる学生でもあります。

 

2人の陶芸家による本展「Appetite For Failure」では様々な作品を自身の手によって生み出し続けて来た”成功”ではなく”失敗”をコンセプトに掲げます。

 

研究、調査、採集、選択など、作品が誕生する過程には多くの行為が発生しますが、成功と失敗との認識は曖昧なもののようにも感じます。

 

「失敗すると苦しみや挫折の感情を生み出しますが、意識を変えると、それら負の感情こそが成功へ1番近い経験だと思います。失敗することからの学びは非常に意義があるのです。」

 

このように語るOnreeとHansは本展で失敗とは何かを示し、鑑賞者に問いただします。

 

本展では両作家の陶芸作品のみではなく、アート作品も同時に発表いたします。

陶芸を軸として活動しながら、陶芸の概念や領域を広げている両作家の試みをぜひこの機会にご高覧ください。

 

 

tata bookshop/gallery is pleased to present “Appetite For Failure” a two-person exhibition by contemporary mixed media artist Onree Roque and ceramic artist Hans Chew from July 1 (Thu) – July 11 (Sun), 2021.

 

Onree Roque is a contemporary mixed-media artist from New York who works mainly in ceramics, while Hans Chew is a Singaporean who is currently working as a ceramic artist and studying ceramics at Tama Art University.

 

This exhibition by the two potters “Appetite For Failure” is based on the concept of “failure” rather than “success” which has led them to create various works of art with their own hands.

 

Many actions occur in the process of creating a work of art, such as research, investigation, collection, and selection.

 

“Failure creates feelings of pain and frustration, but if you change your mind, those negative feelings are the closest you can get to success. Learning from failure is very meaningful “

 

In this exhibition, Onree and Hans show us what failure is, and ask us to question it.

 

In this exhibition, not only the ceramic works of both artists, but also their art works will be presented simultaneously.

We hope that you will take this opportunity to see these two artists’ attempts to expand the concept and realm of ceramics while working with ceramics as their core.

    Onree Roque（オンレ・ロク）
    ニューヨーク出身。陶芸を中心としたコンテンポラリー・ミクストメディア・アーティスト。アルフレッド大学でアートとデザインの学士号、副専攻として哲学を取得。
    現在は東京を拠点に活動を行い、主に食器や工芸品を制作している。
    陶芸に焦点を当てながら1つのメディアに捉われず、音楽、絵画、彫刻、執筆、映像、写真など、様々な媒体を駆使して、常に創造の限界に挑んでいる。

    Hans Chew （ハンス・チュウ）
    シンガポール出身。陶芸家。
    多摩美術大学工芸学科 陶芸専攻。
    自分の糧となる陶器をつくる以外に、自分自身を探すために作品を制作。
    異質さ、温かさ、懐かしさといったテーマに、陶芸を中心に様々な媒体で作品を発表。
    粘土を触覚的なメディアとして捉え、両手を使って考える行為は、自分の意識を概念化して伝える能力と同じくらい重要であると考え制作を行っている。

    Onree Roque
    Contemporary mixed media artist with a focus in ceramics from New York.
    He graduated from Alfred university with a bfa in art and design, and a minor in philosophy. Onree is currently based in Tokyo working in table ware/ craft. Despite focusing on ceramics Onree’s not confined to one medium. He is constantly pushing the limits of creation by using several different outlets, such asMusic, painting, sculpture, writing, video and photography.

    Hans Chew
    Born in Singapore. Ceramic artist. Currently a student majoring in Ceramics in Tama Art university.
    Apart from making pottery which he views as bread and butter, he also creates objects in search of himself.
    His works often deal with themes of foreignness, warmth and nostalgia.
    As clay is such a tactile medium, he strongly believes that the ability to think with both hands is equally important as the ability to conceptualize and communicate one’s thoughts.
