From 26 March to 12 April 2026, Keisuke Oka + Arimasuton-Builders and IMAS present the exhibition “Sosorarete Sosonokasarete — The IMAS Exhibition: Images, Sound, and Books Emerging from Arimasuton Building” at tata bookshop/gallery.

For the past two decades, architect Keisuke Oka has been developing an ongoing self-built architectural project known as Arimasuton Building in Mita, Tokyo. Constructed collaboratively with more than one hundred participants—most of them friends and acquaintances of Oka—the project has unfolded through an improvisational process without architectural blueprints. This open-ended approach has fostered a collective spirit of experimentation and brought forth a shared joy in the act of making.

Over time, the construction process itself has generated a diverse body of works, including sound recordings, films, zines, and books. This exhibition recreates the vibrant atmosphere of the Arimasuton Building construction site within the gallery space and presents works that have emerged from the project.

Keisuke Oka + Arimasuton-Builders will exhibit and offer for sale books and zines documenting the ongoing construction of Arimasuton Building. For this exhibition, musician KiMiMi and video editor Kiyoshi Tsujii have formed the collaborative unit IMAS, presenting an installation composed of audio and video recordings captured during the construction process.

Coinciding with the exhibition, KiMiMi will release the new album “ИМА” (conatala + Calax Records), created using sound recordings collected at the Arimasuton Building construction combined with KiMiMi’s instrumental performances.

In addition, from 3 April to 16 April, a photography exhibition by Masayuki Sekine, who has documented Arimasuton Building since its early stages of construction, will be held at Bar Chotto, located near the venue.

The exterior of Arimasuton Building can be viewed at any time. Visitors are encouraged to explore tata bookshop/gallery, Bar Chotto, and Arimasuton Building itself, and to experience the creative energy that continues to grow from this unique architectural endeavor.

    Keisuke Oka + Arimasuton-Builders
Architect and self-builder Keisuke Oka together with the workers who have participated in the construction of Arimasuton Building.
From 1995 to 2003, Oka operated the art gallery called Oka Garo in Koenji, Tokyo. In 2003, his proposal for Arimasuton Building was selected for the SD Review, a prominent architecture exhibition in Japan. Construction of Arimasuton Building began in 2005 in Mita, Tokyo.
The building process has involved a wide range of participants—primarily friends of Oka—including housewives, musicians, dancers, video editors, and people from various other backgrounds.
Publications related to the project include Arimasuton Building! — The Man Who Built a Building by His Own Efforts (Keisuke Oka, Chikuma Shobo) and Sing, Dance, Build: How to Make Arimasuton Building (edited by Nao Kimura, written by Arimasuton-Builders, Seidosha).

These recordings have been compiled into the album ИМА (conatala + Calax Records), which will be released to coincide with this exhibition.
Video editor Kiyoshi Tsujii initially joined the Arimasuton Building project to film a documentary. He later became involved in the construction work itself, cutting all the window glass for the building using skills he developed while previously working at a joinery shop.
As an editor, Tsujii has worked on numerous documentary films by director Taku Aoyagi, including Election and Depression, Tokyo Uber Blues, and Fujiyama Cotton. He is currently working on a documentary film about Arimasuton Building.
