「Palm Of The Hand Drawings」

2026年6月26日(金) – 7月5日(日)の期間、MODEによる企画展としてダニエル・ブランバーグ（Daniel Blumberg）による日本初個展「Palm Of The Hand Drawings」を開催いたします。

ダニエル・ブランバーグ（1990年、ロンドン生まれ）は、ドローイング、ソングライティング、即興演奏、サウンドを横断しながら活動するアーティスト／作曲家です。

視覚芸術の実践と並行して、Mute Recordsより複数のソロアルバムを発表しているほか、『Sotto le Nuvole』や『The Brutalist』などの映画音楽も手がけています。『The Brutalist』の劇伴では、2025年アカデミー賞作曲賞を受賞しました。これまでの作品は、Balice Hertling（パリ）、Triennale Milano、Kunsthal Rotterdam、Deichtorhallen Hamburg、KW Institute for Contemporary Art（ベルリン）などで発表されています。

本展では、作家自身がロンドンから携行した小型の銀製フォトケースに収められたドローイング群を発表します。19世紀以降、銀製フォトケースは家族や恋人の肖像写真を身近に携えるための容器として広く用いられてきました。ブランバーグはその内部にドローイングを収めることで、個人的な記憶を保存するための親密な器を、より開かれた想像力のための場へと変容させています。展覧会タイトルは川端康成の『掌の小説』（英題：Palm Of The Hand Stories）に着想を得ており、また、ローベルト・ヴァルザーの『Microscripts』も重要な参照点となっています。両作品はいずれも、小さな形式の中に広大な時間や空間、そして想像力を立ち上げる表現です。

ブランバーグの作品は、鉛筆が普及する以前から用いられていた描画技法である銀筆（シルバーポイント）によって制作されています。銀筆による線は、空気や湿度など周囲の環境に反応しながらゆっくりと酸化し、時間とともに変化を続けます。ブランバーグはこの技法を通して、ドローイングを完成された結果ではなく、時間の経過を記録し続ける持続的なプロセスとして捉えています。

また、2026年6月29日には、草月ホールにて開催される「Keiji Haino & Daniel Blumberg / Ellen Arkbro & Reigakusha Gagaku Ensemble」にも出演します。同公演では、2026年ヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレ音楽部門において金獅子功労賞を受賞した灰野敬二とのコラボレーション・パフォーマンスが行われます。

MODE is pleased to present Palm Of The Hand Drawings, a solo exhibition by Daniel Blumberg, will be held at tata bookshop/gallery in Koenji, Tokyo, from 26 June to 5 July 2026.

Born in London in 1990, Daniel Blumberg is an artist and composer whose practice moves across drawing, songwriting, improvisation, and sound.

For Palm Of The Hand Drawings, his first solo show in Japan, Blumberg presents a group of works housed in small silver photo cases that he carried with him from London. Since the nineteenth century, silver photo cases have commonly served as vessels for carrying portraits of loved ones close at hand. By placing drawings within them, Blumberg transforms these intimate containers once intended to preserve personal memories into sites for open-ended imagination.  The title acknowledges Yasunari Kawabata’s Palm-of-the-Hand Stories. Robert Walser’s Microscripts serves as another important point of reference. Both demonstrate how a small form can contain vast worlds of time, space, and imagination.

The drawings are executed in silverpoint, a drawing technique that predates the widespread use of graphite pencils. The marks made by silverpoint gradually oxidize over time in response to air, humidity, and other environmental conditions. Through this medium, Blumberg approaches drawing not as a finished result but as an ongoing process that continues to register the passage of time. 

Alongside his visual work, Blumberg has released several solo albums on Mute Records and composed scores for films including Sotto le Nuvole and The Brutalist. His score for The Brutalist received the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2025. His work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including, Balice Hertling (Paris), Triennale Milano, Kunsthal Rotterdam, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin).

On 29 June 2026, Blumberg will also appear at Sogetsu Hall in Tokyo as part of June 29th – Keiji Haino & Daniel Blumberg / Ellen Arkbro & Reigakusha Gagaku Ensemble. The evening will feature a collaborative performance between Blumberg and pioneering Japanese experimental musician Keiji Haino, who has been awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2026 Venice Biennale Musica.
