2026.8.20 - 8.30

We are pleased to announce “linear manifold (1993,2026)”, an exhibition by Minoru Sato from Thursday August 20 – Sunday August 30, 2026.
Minoru Sato is an artist who lives in Kamakura. He has an interest in a relationship between a description of nature and an art representation, and is creating art works per physical phenomena and various concepts. His creative activities are explored in the form of installations, multiples, performances and texts.
This exhibition, “linear manifold (1993, 2026)”, is an experimental project in which an installation first presented in 1993 is reinterpreted and recreated in 2026.

One of the earliest international sound art exhibitions in Japan, “SoundCulture Japan”, was held in 1993.
SoundCulture was a festival that began in Sydney in 1991 and subsequently toured the Pacific Rim. The second edition was held in Japan, followed by New Zealand and then California. I took part in the Sydney and Japan editions. This work is a re-creation that includes a reinterpretation of the piece I presented at SoundCulture Japan.
Depending on how waves overlap, their height may increase or their shape may become very sharp; this interference pattern of multiple wave phases overlapping is called coherence. Might something similar occur within our own consciousness? This was my line of thought when I created this work in 1993. Projecting environmental sounds—or the phenomena of sounds flowing within a given space—into discrete, changing vibrations within a space separated from that location. To relate the phenomenon to the projection and bring them into focus as a coherent narrative, there must surely be a structure of cognition at work. It seems there was a good reason why I unintentionally used the word “coherence” at the time, a term that also carries the meaning of consistency. This time, I decided to recreate the installation—which featured one-dimensional vibrations created by sound and strings—by focusing on “linearity” (meaning proportional relationships) and “coherence” as central themes.

What value does a work possess when it is given new life in the present day?
We hope you will take this opportunity to view the exhibition.
