New Figurative Painting
Snapshot Aesthetic

From Thursday, November 12, 2026, through Monday, November 23, 2026 (a national holiday), we will be hosting the “Silvergelatin EXHIBITION – An Exhibition by a Used Bookstore: Placing New Figurative Painting and Snapshot Aesthetics on Equal Footing – .”
Silvergelatin, a used bookstore operating in the suburban area of Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, will once again be holding a pop-up sale on the second floor of Koenji Tata, featuring hand-painted artworks from the Edo period through the postwar era, as well as vintage photographs from the Meiji period through the postwar era. Hand-painted artworks will be sold starting at 300 yen per piece, and vintage photographs will also start at 300 yen per piece. We will also display and sell extremely rare items, mounted for viewing.
New Figurative Painting
When considering the scope of “New Figurative Painting,” we began with Kodai Nakahara and extended our selection to include works tagged by Isabella Stefanelli, keeping our curatorial focus in mind. By interpreting the timeline revealed through fading and damage, we came to realize that these anonymous drawings from the distant past hold some form of answer.
Snapshot Aesthetic
Found photographs are often regarded as essential content for completing a work, and the mechanisms behind their captured meanings tend to be emphasized. For example, while the original purpose of a found photograph is to serve as a record, our primary goal in collecting them is to sell these vintage photographs—the prototypes—with an awareness of the “Snapshot Aesthetic” photographic movement. Even when the location or purpose remains unknown, we sell them without knowing the details.
Please take this opportunity to stop by.
