「MISC / Sound Objects 2000 – 2025」

2025年11月20日(木) – 11月30日(日)の期間、伊東篤宏による個展「MISC / Sound Objects 2000 – 2025」を開催いたします。

伊東篤宏は1993年頃より美術家としての活動を開始し、1997年には自身のインスタレーション作品と同素材である蛍光灯を使用した音具「OPTRON」を発案〜制作し、国内外で数多くの個展、グループ展、サウンドパフォーマンスのライヴを行なっている美術家、OPTRONプレイヤーです。

「MISC / Sound Objects 2000 – 2025」と題された本展では、2000年から2025年までの25年間で製作したサウンドオブジェや音具の中から、作家自身によって選ばれた作品を展示いたします。

1993年頃から始まる私の作品製作の変遷は、平面絵画から始まり、光や音のインスタレーションやサウンドオブジェ、自作音具を使用したライヴサウンドパフォーマンス、と結果的に多岐に渡っているが、2020年のCOVID -19の世界的蔓延期以降、何故か自身のルーツである平面絵画製作、つまり絵を描く方向に移行し、ここ5年は蛍光灯を使用したインスタレーションワークやサウンドオブジェの製作、発表の頻度はめっきり減った。その事に何か明確な理由があったり、ましてや興味が失せた訳ではない。何なら数年前からいつ終わるともなく継続して作り続けている音の鳴る装置も数点あったりする。(今回 新作として展示されるものはそのひとつ)

今更 自分の心境変化の理由探しや、その意味を深掘りする気は毛頭ないのだが、縁あって今回 tata bookshop galleryから展示オファーを頂いたので、ならば敢えてここ25年(四半世紀…)の間に製作したサウンドオブジェ達や音具の中から、何点か選び、新作も含めて再展示してみようと思い立った。(くどい様だが、自身の心境変化の理由探しの為ではない)

当然ながら作品達の生まれた時期や元々の展示場所はそれぞれ異なり、それらをまとめて展示する事など製作時には想定しようもない訳だが、何だかんだで長く造り続けていると本当に有り難い事に今回の様にそれらを一同に展示出来る機会にも恵まれたりする。今迄に様々な機会を下さったキュレーター並びにギャラリー各位には感謝しかない。
今回の展示は故に、明確なコンセプトは存在しないし何らかの目的に帰結することを目指すこともしていない。
MISCとは、miscellaneous / 種々雑多なというラテン語由来の英単語略語であり、今回の展示に相応しいと思った。
彼等は作者も呆れる程に馬鹿馬鹿しくもあっけらかんと鳴り響く。
確かに音ではあるが、音楽とは違う何かをひとりごちている様にも聴こえなくもない。

こういった機会はあまりない (二度とないかもしれない) と思うが、ともあれ気楽に観て、聴いて、そして願わくば楽しんで頂ければ、作者としては幸甚の至りである。

We are pleased to announce “MISC / Sound Objects 2000 – 2025” a solo exhibition by Atsuhiro Ito from Thursday November 20 – Sunday November 30, 2025.

Atsuhiro Ito began his career as an artist around 1993. In 1997, he conceived and created “OPTRON,” a sound instrument using fluorescent tubes—the same material as his installation works. He is an artist and OPTRON player who has held numerous solo and group exhibitions and performed live sound performances both domestically and internationally.

Titled “MISC / Sound Objects 2000 – 2025,” this exhibition presents works selected by the artist himself from among the sound objects and sound instruments he has created over the 25-year period from 2000 to 2025.

The evolution of my artistic practice, which began around 1993, started with two-dimensional painting and has since branched out into light and sound installations, sound objects, and live sound performances using self-made instruments. However, since the global spread of COVID-19 in 2020, I have inexplicably shifted back toward my roots in two-dimensional painting—that is, drawing. Over the past five years, I have primarily focused on creating and presenting installations using fluorescent lights and sound objects. -19 pandemic, I somehow shifted back toward my roots in two-dimensional painting—that is, toward drawing pictures. Over the past five years, the frequency of my installations using fluorescent lights and my sound object creations and presentations has decreased significantly. There isn’t any clear reason for this, nor have I lost interest. In fact, I’ve been continuously working on several sound-producing devices for years now, with no end in sight. (One such piece is being exhibited as a new work this time.)

I have absolutely no desire to search for reasons behind my recent change of heart or delve deeply into its meaning. However, having received an exhibition offer from tata bookshop gallery through a fortunate connection, I decided to deliberately select several sound objects and sound instruments created over the past 25 years (a quarter-century…) and re-exhibit them, including new works. (I know I sound repetitive, but this is not about searching for reasons for my own change of heart.)

Naturally, the pieces were created at different times and originally displayed in different locations. When I made them, I never imagined they might be exhibited together. Yet, somehow, having kept creating for so long, I’ve been truly fortunate to receive opportunities like this one to display them all together. I am nothing but grateful to the curators and galleries who have provided me with various opportunities over the years.
Therefore, this exhibition has no clear concept and does not aim to conclude with any particular purpose.
MISC is an abbreviation of the English word “miscellaneous,” derived from Latin, and I felt it suited this exhibition well.
They ring out with a ridiculous, almost carefree sound that even their creator finds astonishing.
They are indeed sounds, yet they might as well be muttering something that is not quite music.

I realize opportunities like this are rare (perhaps even once-in-a-lifetime), but regardless, I would be most grateful if you could view and listen to them casually, and hopefully, enjoy them.
