Release Exhibition「Lol Coxhill & Veryan Weston: A Night in Gloucester Avenue」

2025年5月15日(木) – 5月25日(日)の期間、Release Exhibition「Lol Coxhill & Veryan Weston: A Night in Gloucester Avenue」を開催いたします。

fischiff VERLAGからカセット2本組ボックス「Lol Coxhill & Veryan Weston: A NIGHT IN GLOUCESTER AVENUE」がリリースされます。本展ではリリースに合わせ、Lol Coxhillのレコードの展示を行います。

フリー・ミュージックの吟遊詩人として知られるサックス奏者ロル・コックスヒル（1932-2012）と、旧知の仲であるピアニストのヴェリヤン・ウェストン（1950-）とのデュエットのカセットが2本組でfischiff VERLAGからリリースされます。70年代後半から80年代前半にかけ、彼らはロンドン近郊の田園都市ウェリン・ガーデン・シティにあるディグズウェル・ハウスという邸宅で共同生活を送っていました。その頃のロンドン・ミュージシャンズ・コレクティブ主催によるコンサートの録音です。

コックスヒルは、レコード以外にもカジュアルでキッチュなメディアであるカセットテープを何本かリリースしていました。今回の音源もカセットでしか残っておらず、コンサートの際に写真やイラストを切り貼りし、コックスヒル自身が手作りしたフライヤーのチープ感やインディ・即席感をあえて醸し出すその趣向にあやかり、『A NIGHT IN GLOUCESTER AVENUE』はカセットのみでの制作となりました。コックスヒルの落書きが印刷された函には、2人のフォトカード、生前のコックスヒルのユニークさが伝わるウェストンによる貴重なライナーノートのほか、ウェストン提供のさまざまな写真が詰まったインデックスが収まっています。

初回200セット限定販売です。リリースに伴い、80年代後半までのコックスヒルのレコードを展示します。そのほかにfischiff厳選のフリー／ECM／アンビエント系の中古レコードの即売箱も併設します。貴重なコックスヒルのレコードも含まれています。この機会に覗いてみてください。

A new double-cassette release from fischiff VERLAG features a duet by saxophonist Lol Coxhill (1932–2012), known as a bard of free music, and his longtime friend, pianist Veryan Weston (b. 1950). Back in the late ’70s and early ’80s, the two lived together in Digswell House, a country estate near London in Welwyn Garden City. These recordings come from concerts organized by the London Musicians’ Collective during that time.

Coxhill was known for releasing not just records, but also quirky, lo-fi cassette tapes—a fitting match for his playful and DIY spirit. This particular recording only survived on cassette, and in keeping with Coxhill’s handmade style (think flyers made with cut-and-paste photos and doodles), A NIGHT IN GLOUCESTER AVENUE is being released exclusively on cassette. It comes in a box printed with Coxhill’s scribbles and includes photo cards of the two artists, a heartfelt liner note by Weston that captures Coxhill’s unique personality, and a visual index packed with photos provided by Weston.

Only 200 copies are available in this first edition. To celebrate the release, we’re also displaying a selection of Coxhill’s vinyl records from the late ’70s through the ’80s. You’ll also find a handpicked crate of secondhand free music, free jazz, ECM, and ambient records curated by fischiff—including a few rare Coxhill gems. Come take a look!
